In 1951, the women of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs Michigan (GFWC-MI)
sought to create a place where young girls facing significant challenges could find
support, stability, and hope for their futures. Their vision centered on a rehabilitative
program grounded in compassion and personal growth. They were determined that this
would not be an impersonal institution, but rather a nurturing environment designed to
guide vulnerable girls toward healthier paths.
Girlstown was established in 1958, as a supportive alternative for youth who needed
structure, encouragement, and the opportunity to build the skills necessary for a
productive and fulfilling life.
