Independent Living Programs

Guiding Harbor offers three supportive programs to help young adults aged 16 to 21 transition from foster care to independent living. Each program is designed to meet individuals where they are, providing the tools and guidance needed to thrive on their own.

Supervised Independent Living (SIL)

The SIL program places young adults in private homes or independent housing, where they receive guidance from a mentor-like provider. Participants are expected to be self-motivated, attending school or working, and managing their daily responsibilities. Case managers provide ongoing support to ensure success.

Ages 16 and up

Enrolled in school or employed

Able to live independently with support

Court-ordered through DHHS

Independent Living Plus (ILP)

ILP offers a structured, group home-like setting where youth can develop essential life skills such as cooking, budgeting, and decision-making. The program lasts up to 24 months and is tailored to each individual’s needs, aiming to prepare them for a successful transition to independent living.

Ages 16 to 19

Graduated from residential care or unable to return home

Demonstrated readiness to learn and grow

Young Adult Voluntary Foster Care (YAVFC)

YAVFC provides continued support for young adults who are working, attending school, or participating in job training. Participants live in a family-like setting or independently, with case managers offering guidance to help them achieve their goals.

Ages 18 to 21

Employed or actively engaged in education or job training

No longer under court jurisdiction but still receiving support through DHHS
